As the largest federal program providing early education services in the U.S., Head Start plays an essential role in supporting the development of low-income children. As such, it also has the potential to serve as a laboratory for testing new curricula, services, and theories regarding how best to promote economically-disadvantaged children's school readiness skills and stem early achievement gaps. This panel presents a series of studies seeking to enhance the quality of Head Start curricula and pinpoint the factors which support or inhibit the success of Head Start programs in promoting young children's academic and behavioral skill development.
