School readiness is of significant interest to policymakers and practitioners. To this end policy makers have emphasized increasing school readiness in a variety of ways. Federal, state, and local efforts have focused on improving child care quality systems, including formal Quality Rating Systems (QRS). However, little is known about the effectiveness and use of these systems. Similarly, kindergarten entry assessments (KEAs) continue to expand nationally, but research to support these measures and validate them is sparse. This panel will examine these two important issues in early childhood policy, focusing on QRS and KEAs in different ways. Implications for policy and practice will be discussed.
