Integrative Statement

Both the interparental relationship and parent-child relationship are key aspects for healthy child development. Therefore, it is no surprise that associations between these concepts have been studied for decades. The four studies in the current symposium further our understanding of how interparental functioning and parenting behaviors might affect child adjustment by: a) meta-analyzing and examining structural associations of already existing knowledge, and b) implementing state-of-the-art techniques, including Dynamic Structural Equation Modeling (DSEM), and Time-Varying Effects Modelling (TVEM) that extend existing research.
The first paper presents the conceptualization of the interparental relationship, which resulted in nine distinctive dimensions. Information from 1603 effect sizes were analyzed to link these different dimensions to children’s internalizing and externalizing problems. The second paper applied meta-analytic structural equation modeling (MASEM) to examine whether post-divorce parenting behaviors mediate the link between interparental conflict and child adjustment following divorce. Associations between multiple parenting dimensions and several domains of child adjustment were analyzed. The third paper investigated the developmental patterns of parental support and depressive symptoms from early adolescence into young adulthood. Possible gender differences were analyzed. The fourth study examined the spillover of interparental conflict on mother-adolescent conflict and the mediating role of negative mood, using daily-diaries across adolescence. Analyses were done on both the day-to-day, and the year-to-year timeframes.
