Many adaptive behaviors require individuals to successfully integrate perceptual information and motor skills in real time. Across development, children who face challenges in visual-motor integration may be at risk for difficulties in performing activities of daily living. In basic and applied research related to visual-motor integration, investigators have focused more on whether children are capable of performing adaptive behaviors rather than the process by which these behaviors are performed. A lens on process, however, can illuminate developmental mechanisms and inform translational efforts, thereby bridging the gap between basic and applied research. To this end, we bring together an interdisciplinary and international group of scientists across the behavioral, computer, intervention, and movement sciences to examine the process of visual-motor integration during activities of daily living. These investigators employ methodologically diverse approaches that involve eye-tracking, kinematics, and virtual reality, yet they share the common goal of understanding the dynamic interplay between visual perception and motor skills in everyday functional behaviors. The presentations span infancy through early adolescence, focusing on optic flow and stepping in infants (Speaker 1), vision and postural control in typically developing and ASD children (Speaker 2), handwriting and eye-hand coordination in early school-age children (Speaker 3), and gap perception/road crossing in children through early adolescence (Speaker 4). Collectively, the presentations and subsequent panel discussion will showcase how methods that examine the process of visual-motor integration in real time can advance translational efforts to promote healthy adaptive behaviors in children.
