3-098 - Variability within neurodevelopmental disorders: Insights from developmental studies

Integrative Statement

Neurodevelopmental disorders, such as Down syndrome, Fragile X, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), show large variability in terms of phenotypic outcomes within a disorder group as well as overlap across different disorders. For many decades, this variability has been considered “noise” or a nuisance variable. However, using examples from both cross-sectional studies and longitudinal studies, the current symposium discusses how examination of this variance can provide novel insight into the factors that can protect or impact phenotypical outcomes.
The first paper examines variance over developmental time and explores early language development in infants with Down syndrome longitudinally in order to verify how early abilities may be related to adult phenotypic outcomes. The second paper focuses on individual differences within a group to determine the impact of ASD and ADHD symptomatology on variability within the language abilities of children with Fragile X longitudinally. In the third paper motor abilities in a cross-sectional sample of children with ADHD are explored in order to examine whether motor difficulties are a core characteristic of ADHD or a developmental outcome of ADHD symptomatology. The fourth paper considers how genetic variance might explain variability within the cognitive outcomes of participants with Down syndrome across the life span.
Together these papers demonstrate that taking a developmental approach provides novel insight into how factors which present early in development impact variability and outcomes later in development. A better understanding of this variability will allow for better theoretical understanding as well as interventions.
