Session Type: Paper Symposium
This symposium assembles international experts to present and discuss the influence of maternal predictable signals during pregnancy and postnatal life on cognitive and emotional development and the potential implications for mental health. The application of a cross species approaches to these questions is implemented to allow for a better understanding of plausible biological mechanisms underlying the association between early experiences and subsequent development. The first presentation utilizes an experimental rodent model and demonstrates that the disrupted patterns of maternal care directly induce aberrant synaptic connectivity and disturbed maturation of cognitive and emotional brain circuits. The second talker presents findings showing that increased mood unpredictability, independent from levels of maternal psychological distress, confer risk for child later psychopathology especially for internalizing disorders. The third presentation evaluates the consequences of unpredictable maternal sensory signals during infancy on the trajectories of neurodevelopment from 1 year of age through adolescence.The fourth presentation evaluates the effect of maternal predictable signals in interaction on child’s self-regulation capacity, behavior and cognitive development during toddlerhood in Finnish birth cohort. Taken as a whole, these talks stress that unpredictable sequences in maternal care and also in maternal mood influence the maturation of the developing brain in the several developmental areas. Furthermore, these talks underscore the importance of looking longitudinally at patterns of maternal sensory signals and their influence on child development.
