1-037 - Developmental Influences on Cardiometabolic Risk in the Early Lifespan

Integrative Statement

Cardiometabolic risk (CMR) factors—including obesity, elevated lipids, hypertension and elevated systemic inflammation—have reached unprecedented rates among young people in the United States and are also an increasing public health problem in low and middle income countries. CMR not only predicts poor physical health, but also influences future social, emotional, cognitive, and academic development. To date, CMR is understudied during the early life-span and relatively little is known about its developmental origins. This interdisciplinary symposium fills this gap in research, drawing on four samples from diverse backgrounds.

Paper 1 shows that adolescents with a history of institutional rearing and high and stable levels of externalizing problems between ages 8 to 16 are at increased risk for elevated inflammation. Paper 2 reports that specific emerging self-regulatory skills in the emotional, behavioral, attentional, and cognitive domains from ages 2 to 7 uniquely predict late adolescent latent profiles of CMR factors. Paper 3 draws on a large nationally representative longitudinal study and shows that self-regulation at age 2 predicts obesity at age 5.5, but that these predictions differ by sex of the child and maternal education. Finally, Paper 4 examines inflammation in children in a high-poverty context in rural Nicaragua, finding that children of mothers with higher allostatic load and food insecurity displayed higher levels of systemic inflammation.

Together, the contributions to this symposium shed new light on developmental influences on CMR in the early life-span, highlighting especially the roles of multiple facets of childhood self-regulation and maternal biological and educational factors.
