Session Type: Paper Symposium
Parenting is central to child development. As the parenting research move beyond understanding how maternal sensitivity and responsiveness relate to children´s positive development, studies have begun to include fathers and other dimensions of parenting. For example, researchers now investigate playfulness, challenge, and stimulation during play in mothers and fathers interaction with their children, widening our comprehension of parent-child interactions and their impact on child outcomes (e.g., Malin et al., 2017; Paquette, 2004; Menashe- Grinberg & Aztaba-Poria, 2017). However, there are still limitations in this research that motivate further investigation. In this proposed paper symposium we provide an international snapshot of early fathers and mothers´ playfulness and child development. We present complementary evidence of distinct parenting play behaviours and different influences. Papers (1) and (2) focus on mothers´ and fathers’ levels of playfulness and children´s development on three domains, including vocabulary, and regulatory and social skills. Papers (3) and (4) examine whether child characteristics moderate the relation between maternal or parental playfulness and child outcomes.
Overall, these papers contribute to our understanding of maternal and paternal playfulness to child development.
