Integrative Statement
Family-centered prevention and intervention in early childhood hold great promise for reducing behavior problems and promoting school readiness, academic achievement and mental health.
This symposium includes presentations from four academic institutions. Findings are presented from five randomized controlled trials of four family-centered interventions delivered to families of young children. Interventions include the Family Check-Up, a multi-level, ecological approach to intervention and treatment; Research-based, Developmentally-Informed Parent (REDI-P); a home visiting program for children enrolled in Head Start; The Chicago Parent Program (CPP), a group-based intervention for treating preschool children’s behavior problems; and ParentCorps, a multi-component, family-centered enhancement to Pre-Kindergarten programs including a group-based parenting program. All four interventions have been shown in previous trials to meaningfully impact parent and child outcomes. These studies are designed to examine implementation processes as well as impact on a broad range of outcomes. Discussion will focus on ways in which study findings can inform policy and practice.
