Integrative Statement

Components of the stress response system operate in an integrated manner that, under optimal conditions, facilitate coordinated physiological responses to maintain homeostasis (McEwen, 2007). Despite well-developed theoretical models of multisystem functioning (e.g., doctrine of autonomic space, Berntson et al., 1994; adaptive calibration model, Del Guidice et al. 2011), empirical studies of cross-system functioning have been scarce, particularly from a developmental perspective. In addition to the challenges of collecting physiological data from young children repeatedly over time, one of the barriers to understanding multisystem functioning has been a limitation in analytic methods that are able to capture and model the complexities of such data. Understanding the interactive activity of multiple systems can offer a more comprehensive understanding of psychophysiological relations with children’s developmental and behavioral outcomes, and may help resolve discrepancies that often arise when stress systems are studied in isolation of each other. This symposium includes four papers that discuss how advanced research paradigms and statistical approaches (including those from disciplines complementary to, but outside of, the field of developmental psychology) are capable of modeling multisystem physiological data over time and at multiple time scales. We illustrate these data analytic techniques with empirical studies of children across several developmental periods, in the context of varied types of multisystem physiological coordination, and provide examples of how multisystem activity has implications for children’s behavioral and neurocognitive outcomes.
