Integrative Statement

Effective community-based social support can improve outcomes and provide a buffer for the educational, relationship, and well-being needs of children and families. Through translational community-based efforts, researchers and practitioners may be able to inform social policy and service delivery for vulnerable populations. To achieve these ends, it is imperative to understand the methods, tools, and strategies needed to engage in best practices for social support delivery.

This conversation roundtable will provide a forum to discuss strategies for successfully engaging and supporting children and families with community-based initiatives. James D. Morgante and Jorge M. Carvalho Pereira will moderate the roundtable, which brings together distinguished developmental science scholars, representing perspectives from Behavioral Economics, Psychology, Sociology, and Speech & Hearing Sciences. Each panelist is actively engaged in an initiative centered on bridging developmental science and practice in the service of improving developmental outcomes for marginalized and vulnerable children and their families. Panelists will describe their initiatives, in the areas of educational, health, income, and parenting support, and share successes, challenges, and opportunities with developing and conducting a translational community-based effort.

The proposed roundtable will address the SRCD strategic plan by (a) providing a forum to Communicate, Exchange, and Translate scientific knowledge about community-based initiatives to policies and practices for improving human well-being, (b) Advancing Developmental Science through collaboration and communication across disciplines to foster a more fully integrative developmental science, and (c) showcasing community-based efforts that Integrate Diversity and recognize that developmental science must reflect diversity in the individuals and communities it studies.
