Session Type: Paper Symposium
Fathers play significant roles as parents and partners in promoting early child development. However, the majority of the parenting literature has focused exclusively on mothers, overlooking fathers within the proximal caregiving environments of families. The papers in this symposium draw data from diverse samples across international populations to spotlight various ways by which fathers relate to their partners and their children’s early development outcomes. The first paper examines the associations between fathers’ involvement, mothers’ parenting, and mothers’ well-being in refugee and disadvantaged families with young children in Lebanon. The second paper uses data from a maternal parenting intervention to test mothers’ and fathers’ stimulation as independent and bidirectional mediators underlying intervention impacts on preschoolers’ development outcomes in Pakistan. The final paper examines the associations between fathers’ perpetration of violence against their wives and children’s early growth and development outcomes in Vietnam. Together, these papers affirm the importance of targeting both mothers and fathers in parenting and early child development intervention research and unpacking family processes across global contexts.
