3-068 - The Pervasiveness of Stress and Adversity in the Lives of Today's U.S. Latino/a Adolescents

Integrative Statement

Today’s Latino/a adolescents face an unprecedented array of contextual stressors and adversities harmful to youth’s positive adjustment. Papers in this symposium will use diverse methodological approaches to describe stressors and adversities tied to acculturation processes, discrimination experiences, and punitive immigration policies faced by Latino/a adolescents or their parents. The first two papers provide an in-depth description of adversity among Latino/a youth and parents; whereas, the latter two papers link stressors and adversities to changes in Latino/a adolescent adjustment. In this symposium’s first paper, the authors utilize data from three independent samples of Latino/a adolescents to describe the prevalence of both general and police discrimination among adolescents and how these discrimination experiences vary by youth’s age, gender, and immigrant generational status. The symposium’s second paper uses a mixed-methods approach to describe how U.S. Latino parents of adolescents have been impacted by recent changes in immigration actions and news, particularly those tied to the Trump administration. Authors of the symposium’s third paper use Structural Equation Modeling to investigate how different facets of acculturative stress - bicultural stressors and English pressures – are uniquely associated with changes in academic well-being for Latino youth during middle school. The symposium’s fourth paper demonstrates the value of using Latent Transition Analyses to understand adolescent transitions into and out of adversity and the links between these changes and Latino/a youth’s externalizing and internalizing problems. Taken together, symposium papers provide in-depth knowledge about the pervasive and impactful experiences of stress and adversity among today’s Latino/a adolescents.
