2-155 - Leveraging Healthcare for Population-Level Prevention of Disparities in Child Development: Linking Across Services and Platforms

Integrative Statement

Disparities in early child development and mental health begin in infancy and adversely impact educational, economic, and health outcomes across the life course. Initiating prevention before disparities emerge (i.e., primary prevention) is therefore critically important for optimizing outcomes, and many effective programs have been developed by promoting adaptive parenting strategies. However, access to families with young children, together with high costs, has been a barrier to population-level dissemination of these programs. Integration of primary prevention programs within pediatric healthcare has the potential to address these barriers, given the unique access that pediatricians have to families beginning at birth, and the opportunity to limit cost by taking advantage of already-existing family travel and infrastructure.

This symposium will bring together three perspectives relevant to research, policy and practice in utilizing linkages between pediatric healthcare and evidence-based approaches within and outside of the healthcare system, to prevent disparities. The first presentation will describe implementation of primary prevention in healthcare linked with systematic screening to provide co-located mental health services. The second presentation will describe implementation and preliminary findings from a citywide program linking pediatric primary prevention programs supporting parenting, to programs with similar messages in libraries and other community locations. The third presentation will provide early findings from an RCT of a program linking healthcare-based primary prevention with secondary/tertiary prevention, through home visiting, for families with emergent relational health challenges. The program Chairs will then frame a broad discussion regarding the opportunities and challenges of utilizing pediatric healthcare for population-level engagement and impacts.
