Integrative Statement

Pediatric pain is a major public health concern; however, it is not as commonly recognized, diagnosed, and treated as adult pain. Recurrent pain estimates among children have ranged from 4-83% depending on location (e.g. headache, musculoskeletal), time period (e.g., monthly, weekly), and age, suggesting pain is a common occurrence for many youth (King et al., 2011). Greater pain among children has been associated with increased depressive symptoms, school absences, and poorer quality of life (Holm et al., 2012; Palermo 2000). As a new topic for SRCD, this symposium covers parental responses, psychosocial and other health conditions, and cognitive skills as risk and resilience factors of pediatric pain, and addresses effective intervention. Through use of advanced methodologies and inclusion of diverse samples of children, the presentations and discussion aim to explicate key risk and resilience factors associated with pain experiences among children from three different developmental stages (i.e., infancy, middle childhood, adolescence). The presentations will examine 1) parental influences, specifically insensitive parent behaviors, on pain-related distress among infants; 2) the association between sleep and pain among twins in middle childhood and how internalizing symptoms and socioeconomic status moderate this relation; and 3) the effectiveness of a brief cognitive-behavioral intervention to increase effective pain management among adolescents and their parents. Together these presentations suggest potential targets of intervention, including reducing insensitive parent behaviors, increasing sleep efficiency, and incorporating cognitive and behavioral skills to improve pain outcomes among infants, children, and adolescents and highlight future paths of exploration in pediatric pain research.
