Integrative Statement

The first 1000 days of life (from conception to 2 years) are a critical window in determining the effect of exposure to socio-economic and health challenges (such as under nutrition or poverty) on early brain development. One third of children living in low- and middle-income countries, where these challenges can be prevalent, fail to reach their developmental milestones. The human brain is highly susceptible to input from the immediate environment, and these early influences can be determinant of outcome in later childhood and adulthood. A recent shift in global health research has been to move existing research lab-based measures, often primarily used in high income settings, outside of the lab to better reach socially disadvantaged populations.

This symposium will discuss the application of three objective measures of behaviour and brain development - electroencephalography (EEG), eye-tracking and functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Each discussant will share their distinct perspective and research findings from four global health research projects. The first talk will discuss findings from an auditory oddball EEG paradigm with 1- and 5-month-old infants in rural Gambia. The second talk will discuss two eye-tracking tasks used to assess attention, habituation and novelty detection in 5- to 10-month old’s in rural Malawi. The third talk will discuss findings from a social selectivity fNIRS paradigm with 6- and 36- month old infants and toddlers in urban Bangladesh. Finally, the fourth talk will discuss the application of an early language processing eye-tracking task with 16-24 month old toddlers in rural India.
