Integrative Statement

Military families experience the same joys and challenges as civilian families. They also experience joys and challenges unique to their experiences as military families. Much of the literature on military families has come from a deficit perspective, that is, how being in a military family negatively affects the members of the family (Karre, Perkins, and Aronson, 2018). However, military families possess many strengths and children in military families thrive (Easterbrooks, Ginsburg, & Lerner, 2013). In order to gain a comprehensive picture of the strengths and challenges of military families, as well as to identify factors that could help families that may be struggling, there is a need to increase our understanding of what factors help families thrive. This symposium examines military families from a strengths perspective, investigating factors that support military parents in their parenting role. Two papers examine military fathers’ parenting and one paper examines the unique experiences of service members who are mothers. The investigations examine potential protective factors, such as emotion regulation, resilience, financial security, health functioning, social support, and social functioning.
