Integrative Statement

This symposium will present novel approaches to studying stress physiology during infancy and early childhood that consider the role of prenatal and early life contexts and examine implications for socioemotional development and regulation. Presentations will explore these processes in diverse, typically understudied populations, expanding upon extant research predominantly focused on Caucasian or low-risk samples. The first paper examines for whom prenatal stress gets under the skin by impacting infants’ autonomic nervous system (ANS) functioning, in a diverse sample of low-income mothers. Findings suggest that greater prenatal stress predicts greater ANS reactivity and weaker regulation for children receiving low-quality parenting, but infants who receive high-quality parenting are buffered from those prenatal programming associations. The second paper examines whether preschoolers’ hair cortisol serves as a marker of differential susceptibility to variations in family wealth in rural Pakistan. It provides sex-specific evidence that children with low cortisol may be more sensitive to positive environmental effects on cognition and behavior. The third paper examines early childhood profiles of longitudinal ANS reactivity trajectories in a sample of low-income Latino families, and shows that profiles confer differential susceptibility to the effects of early life fathers’ support on behavioral problems at age 7. The fourth paper identifies 4 multisystem profiles of preschoolers with distinct patterns of sympathetic and parasympathetic ANS functioning and demonstrates that profiles differ with respect to self-regulation outcomes: executive functioning, emotion regulation, and behavioral regulation. Discussion will be focused on how multi-context, multi-system approaches can enrich understanding of complex developmental processes across sociodemographic strata.
