Cognitive control, th goal-driven ability to adapt behavior, shows a linear increase across adolescence into early adulthood. Reward-sensitivity, on the other hand, reaches maturity in adolescence. These studies aim to address interactions between reward and cognitive control across this developmental period, examining facilitative and disruptive effects of reward. Given the importance of the period from adolescence through emerging adulthood for the development of risk, we further link observed interactions between reward and cognitive control to symptoms of psychopathology.
The first paper manipulates reward association in emerging adults using attention-training and motor-training paradigms and then tests reward-related disruptions in attentional and motor control. Results demonstrate the reward biases can have both facilitative and impairing effects, depending on context and training, and that these effects may have some degree of domain specificity. The second paper assesses how inhibitory control over reward relates to psychopathology in adolescence. Findings indicate that inhibitory control over reward predict internalizing, rather than externalizing symptoms; however, externalizing symptoms were linked with increased recruitment of regions implicated in cognitive control. The third paper brings these time periods together, testing how reward might facilitate proactive and reactive control across adolescents and adults. Results demonstrate recruitment of fronto-parietal regions across ages and general age-related improvements in cognitive control with similar effects of reward on control across ages. These papers investigate the important topic of how reward may both thwart and support cognitive control across adolescence and emerging adulthood, and extends these interactions to links with real world outcomes such as psychopathology.
