Integrative Statement

Adolescence serves as a critical window for development, with rapid changes in both physical and mental health. Moreover, it is well known that, the transition from early adolescence into early adulthood is commonly characterized by the initiation of drug use and emergence of psychopathology. Twin and family studies consistently stress the importance of both genetics and environmental factors as contributions to these types of problematic behaviors.
Therefore, mitigating substance use and mental health problems during this period necessitates a detailed, developmental, understanding of such risk/protective factors underlying these outcomes. Genetically-informed studies of development take advantage of molecular genetic data and/or family data, to tease apart and identify specific genetic and importantly, environmental liabilities. Likewise, the designs of these studies afford improved causal, which is imperative for effective intervention/prevention efforts. This symposium features a series of papers focused on utilizing genetically-informed designs to better elucidate adolescent psychopathology and problematic substance use. The first study, of adolescence, examined associations between polygenic risk scores (PGRS), developed from genome-wide studies of antisocial behavior, and correlated phenotypes such as impulsivity, oppositional defiant disorder, and conduct disorder. The second paper examined the interplay between a conduct disorder PGRS and community disadvantage in predicting adolescent marijuana use. Finally, the third paper used data from independent, longitudinal twin studies, to examine genetic and environmental contributions to the initiation and course of marijuana use as well as mental health outcomes throughout adolescence. Each study provides evidence for overlapping genetic and environmental risk for both substance use and psychopathology.
