Session Type: Paper Symposium
As research on African American youth has begun to mature, new questions regarding the ways that general aspects of parenting African American youth interface with culturally relevant parenting strategies like racial socialization. The proposed symposium will present 3 papers that examine different aspects of parenting and racial socialization with African American early and middle adolescents and how they are linked to psychosocial outcomes. Paper 1 presents a replication and extension of previous research through its examination of parent-child relationship quality as a moderator of the relationship between racial socialization messages and adolescent depressive symptoms. It reports interesting distinctions between impacts for mothers and fathers. Papers 2 and 3 present separate examinations of the Integrative Conceptual Model of Parental Racial/Ethnic and Emotion Socialization (Dunbar et al., 2017). Both papers demonstrate the specific ways racial socialization strategies foster or exacerbate emotion regulation behaviors in a middle school (paper #1) and a high school (paper #2) sample, respectively. This 3-paper panel will conclude with remarks by a prominent expert in the field and a question-and-answer period with the audience.
