1-063 - The Multiple Factors Influencing Developmental Pathways of Behavioral Inhibition

Thu, March 21, 12:30 to 2:00pm, Baltimore Convention Center, Floor: Level 3, Room 312

Session Type: Paper Symposium

Integrative Statement

Behavioral inhibition (BI), characterized by negative reactivity and withdrawal in response to novel stimuli, displays moderate continuity across time with associations to social reticence, withdrawal, and internalizing problems (Perez-Edgar & Fox, 2018). Models linking BI to maladaptive outcomes propose multiple factors that increase vulnerability for those with this temperamental profile (Degnan & Fox, 2007). This symposium will highlight the importance of both cognition and context for BI across childhood. From data encompassing multiple levels of analysis and developmental time points, paper presentations will consider the roles of sustained attention (assessed via in vivo eye tracking technology), inhibitory control, and the preschool caregiving context in socioemotional outcomes for BI children. A discussion will place this work within current and future developmental temperament research.
