2-116 - Addressing Inequities among African American and Latinx girls: At the Nexus of Research, Prevention and Advocacy

Integrative Statement

Across various domains, research has highlighted inequities and disparities that impact the development, health and well-being of African American and Latinx girls and young women. Though these inequities have been noted, there remains a need for research frameworks that acknowledges the intersectional context of development and its implications for development across the life span. Further, frameworks that emphasize both challenges and strengths in these developmental pathways can play a central role in addressing issues of inequity and disparity. This roundtable discussion will highlight current and emerging issues in the study of African American and Latinx girls’ development, with specific attention to how health and social inequities directly and indirectly shape health and well-being. Further, a key contribution of this discussion will be to highlight the distinct challenges and strengths of African American and Latinx girls as well as how these experiences shape development across the lifespan. Last, roundtable panelists with engage in a dialogue about the translation and dissemination of research to address health and social inequities among African American and Latinx girls. This roundtable discussion will be moderated Dr. Faye Belgrave, a nationally-recognized expert on the development and implementation of culturally-specific preventative interventions with African American youth, including girls and young women.
