Session Type: Federal Agency Symposium
This symposium brings together four Institutes at the National Institutes of Health to discuss priorities for child development research: the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). Attendees will be exposed to potential homes for their research at NIH. This symposium will also highlight research opportunities for early stage investigators and trainees.
NICHD will present priorities of two branches relevant to the SRCD audience: the Child Development and Behavior Branch (CDBB) and the Pediatric Trauma and Critical Illness Branch (PTCIB). NIMH will present research priorities within the Division of Translational Research (DTR), which supports research on the mechanisms contributing to the etiology of childhood-onset mental disorders and on the developmental trajectories of risk and resilience. NIDA will highlight research priorities related to children and adolescents in their Division of Epidemiology, Services, and Prevention Research (DESPR) and provide an overview of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. NIAAA will present their research program on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), which includes research on preventing prenatal alcohol exposure, the effects of alcohol on the fetus, and interventions to mitigate health effects of prenatal alcohol exposure.
Altogether, the goal of the symposium is to encourage generation of scientific ideas within the priorities of each Institute and explain funding opportunities at the NIH to those newer to this arena.
