Integrative Statement

Navigating federal funding opportunities can be challenging particularly for scholars just starting their careers as researchers. This session aims to build an understanding of how the process of competing for and ultimately obtaining independent funding for training or research fits within the context of broader career planning for scholars. Specifically, this session homes in on career-enhancing, funding opportunities for graduate and medical students, post-doctoral fellows and new faculty members to facilitate understanding of the grant process and strategic planning to increase the competitiveness of applicants and begin to think through the role of grantsmanship in developing a comprehensive line of research. Individuals representing three major federal funding agencies, the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Institute of Education Sciences (IES), will embed the discussion of current funding opportunities in the context of broader career planning to help audience members plan for and position themselves to be competitive now and/or in the future. This symposium will highlight how funding opportunities at NSF, NIH and IES vary according to career level, foci (e.g., training or research), level of funding, and specific eligibility criteria. The chair will present an integrative discussion of the three presentations to help identify commonalities and differences in federal opportunities for the audience followed by an open question and answer session.
