MOTIFORM, an interdisciplinary program based on self-determination theory to promote motor skills and social participation.

Abstract

Context: Children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) have motor impairments that interfere with their performance during daily and physical activities and school tasks. These impairments often lead them to withdraw from physical activities or to avoid them, thus leading to decrease social participation. We developed the MOTIFORM program which combines motor activities and parent workshops inspired by the principles of the self-determination theory to promote children’s motivation to participate in various physical activities. Objective: To determine the impact of MOTIFORM on motor skills of children with DCD. Method: Our pre-post study included 23 children with DCD and aged between 5 and 11 years old. After recruitment, they were divided into 2 groups matched for age and sex: the MOTIFORM group included children participating in the program once a week, during 12 weeks (90 minutes session) and a control group who did not participate in MOTIFORM. Motor skills (Movement Assessment Battery for Children-2nd edition (MABC-2)) of both groups were assessed before the start of the program for the MOTIFORM (T1) and directly at the end of MOTIFORM or 12 weeks after T1 for the control group (T2). Results: At T1, no differences were observed between the 2 groups for age, sex, mother’s education, family income and motor skills. At T2, the MABC-2’s mean Total standard score increased from 5.00 to 6.00 (p = 0.0798) for MOTIFORM’s group, whereas motor skills of children in the control group demonstrated no change (mean of 5.00) between T1 and T2. Conclusion: Overall, children participating in the MOTIFORM pilot program may improve their motor skills. However, a future study with a larger sample size is require to demonstrate the impact of MOTIFORM on motor skills of children who have DCD.
