The role of home literacy environment in reading achievement, attitudes and emotions in the Arabic speaking children

Abstract

Extensive research has been conducted in the field of reading in Arabic. The focus has typically been on the impact of the orthographic and Diglossic constructs of the Arabic language on the process of reading acquisition. Less research has been conducted on the contextual and emotional factors involved in reading Arabic. There are only few studies on reading in Arabic that investigated the effect of home literacy environment of students on their performance in reading and on their attitudes and emotions towards reading.
The current study aims to fill this gap. We examined the influence of home literacy environment reported by student's family on literacy achievements (reading accuracy and rate, vocabulary and reading comprehension), reading related emotions (reading self concept and reading anxiety) and reading attitudes. 140 Arabic speaking fourth and fifth graders (80 females, 68 fourth graders participated in the study. Students were administered a battery of literacy measures (vocabulary, word reading, reading comprehension) as well as questionnaires of reading self-concept, attitude towards reading and reading related emootions. In addition, student's family members filled a questionnaire regarding their home literacy environment.
