Abstract

This article reviews the available studies on factors that may play a role in parents' participation in parenting skills programs to prevent externalized behaviors. A systematic review following PRISMA guidelines was performed for studies published in English and French on Web of Science, PsycINFO and ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global from January 2000 to June 14, 2020. Of more than 830 articles identified, eight studies examining the differences between parents who agree or refuse to participate in different programs have been identified in databases using a combination of keywords. The quality of the studies was analyzed with the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. The results were then grouped into themes to allow the concepts to emerge better. Most of the studies have focused on the portrait of the child, the ecological context of the family, the socio-demographic characteristics of the family as well as on recruitment strategies. The results suggest that the severity and frequency of the externalized behaviors, socioeconomic status, schedule conflicts and family responsibilities, social support, knowledge of the existence of the program as well as recruitment strategies may play an important role in the recruitment of parents into a parenting skills program to prevent externalized behavior. More specifically, many studies agreed that a higher level of severity and frequency of behavior problems, higher socioeconomic status, better social support as well as an organization of program conditions that helps with schedule conflicts are associated with higher participant recruitment. This study provides some insights into the characteristics and recruitment strategies that could be used to reduce participation barriers, such as financial compensation, use of the group program, child care as well as offering program at various times.
