National Endowment for the Arts: Research Resources and Funding Opportunities

Abstract

This poster will provide a brief overview of the National Endowment for the Arts’ Office of Research & Analysis, our research funding opportunities, and additional arts-related resources that focus on research and evaluation on the value and impact of the arts for child and adolescent development.
The Arts Endowment Office of Research and Analysis conducts and supports research on significant topics such as the impact of the arts on individuals and societies. Our office is particularly interested in two overarching research questions: 1) What are the underlying conditions and vehicles for arts participation?, and 2) What are the direct and/or indirect benefits of the arts for individuals and/or communities? Much of our research and the research that we support is drawn from the arts field itself, but also many other fields that tie into the arts, such as child development, education, psychology, organizational research, economics, urban planning, neuroscience, sociology, anthropology, medicine & health, and philanthropy, to name a few.
In our research programs, we offer two unique opportunities for funding: the Research Grants in the Arts program and the Research Labs cooperative agreement program. The Research Grants in the Arts program funds research that investigates the value and/or impact of the arts, either as individual components of the U.S. arts ecology or as they interact with each other and/or with other domains of American life; matching/cost share grants of $10,000 to $100,000 will be awarded. The NEA Research Labs cooperative agreement program funds transdisciplinary research teams grounded in the social and behavioral sciences, yielding empirical insights about the arts for the benefit of arts and non-arts sectors alike, matching/cost share cooperative agreements of up to $150,000 will be awarded.
Additional information will be provided on other grant programs at the Arts Endowment such as the Grants for Arts Projects program which, includes collective impact grants for Arts Education projects. Information will also be provided on arts research resources, such as the National Archive of Data on Arts & Culture, the Interagency Task Force on the Arts and Human Development, and the Sound Health Network initiative with the National Institutes of Health and the Kennedy Center.
