IES Research Grant Submission and Peer Review Process

Abstract

Under the Education Sciences Reform Act (ESRA), the Institute of Education Science (IES) is required to have a peer review system, involving highly qualified individuals, to review applications for grants and cooperative agreements. Research, statistics, and evaluation reports produced by, or supported through, IES must also be subject to rigorous peer review before being published or otherwise made available to the public. The IES Office of Science, led by the Deputy Director for Science, oversees the scientific peer review activities for grant applications and reports. These peer review activities are an important step to ensure high quality scientific products both internally and for externally funded projects. However, we know that researchers are often unclear on what these processes entail.

In this poster presentation, we will present information about the grant application peer review process that may be helpful for researchers who are considering submitting grant applications to IES. The poster will describe the steps taken by Office of Science staff to develop the peer review panels and how that relates to applications received. This description will include highlighting our standing panels, our decision-making process for creating single-session panels, and how we place applications on panels. What happens with applications from the time of receipt until panel meetings will be briefly explained, as well as an overview of the panel meeting process. We hope this presentation will provide a better understanding of the IES grant submission and peer review process for researchers interested in applying for IES funding.
