Early Learning and Development Research at the National Institute on Drug Abuse

Abstract

The mission of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is to advance science on causes and consequences of substance use and addiction and to apply that knowledge to improve individual and public health. Program officials in the Prevention Research Branch of the National institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), will present on current research priorities and opportunities for research focused on early childhood (0-8 years). The presentation will provide an overview of research supported across NIDA (basic science, epidemiology and etiology, prevention and treatment intervention and services research, and policy research), emphasizing relevance to early learning and development research. Environmental, social and contextual factors, such as the current public health pandemic, the ongoing opioid epidemic, and social determinants of health will be highlighted, with examples of NIDA-supported research. NIDA’s next strategic plan, for 2021-2025 is anticipated soon. Strategic priorities and cross-cutting research topics that inform research on early learning and development will be highlighted – e.g., understanding substance use, behavior and the brain; development of novel interventions; implementation of evidence-based interventions; addressing stigma and reducing health disparities; and data analytics and open science. In addition, information on funding opportunity announcements and other relevant resources will be provided.
