Writing Successful Methodological Papers Related to Child and Adolescent Development

Abstract

Understanding childhood and adolescent development often requires the use of specialized methods, measurement, and analyses. Therefore, it is critical to build the capacity of researchers to conceptualize, design, and write papers that advance methods in child and youth development
This interactive professional development session will provide attendees with the opportunity to engage directly with journal editors about strategies for writing successful methodological papers related to child and adolescent development. Participating journal editors include Dr. Jennifer Watling Neal (editor for the Methods Paper feature at Social Development), Dr. Luke Miratrix (editor for the Methodology Papers feature at Journal of Research on Educational Effectiveness) and Dr. Robin Codding (editor of School Psychology, which includes an Advances in Research Methods feature). The session will begin with brief overviews of the method paper formats at Social Development, Journal of Research on Educational Effectiveness, and School Psychology. Next, attendees will have opportunities to engage in small breakout groups to discuss their goals and experiences writing methodological papers. Finally, the session will end with a large group discussion focused on concrete strategies and recommendations for writing methodological papers.
