Session Type: Paper Symposium
Ninety percent of the world’s adolescents live in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), yet the majority of research on adolescent depression has been conducted in high-income countries (HICs). There are major gaps in our knowledge with regards to identifying adolescents at risk for depression and understanding how depression develops, especially in low-resource settings. To address these gaps, we recently established an interdisciplinary network of researchers and clinicians working in Brazil, Nepal, Nigeria, UK and USA - the MQ Identifying Depression Early in Adolescence (IDEA) consortium, which aims to improve our understanding of the development of depression and identification of risk for depression by using a range of approaches, including systematic literature reviews, Delphi exercises, theory of change workshops and stakeholder interviews, epidemiological investigations, immunology, and neuroimaging. This symposium presents the first wave of findings from the IDEA consortium. The first paper will report on the results of a systematic review to identify biological markers of youth depression in LMICs and HICs. The second paper will discuss a novel approach to stratifying adolescents by risk for depression and preliminary findings of a new study using this approach to recruit a sample of adolescents in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The third paper will discuss results from a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study conducted in this Brazilian sample to identify patterns of neural activity associated with risk and presence of depression. Finally, the fourth paper will discuss stakeholder perspectives on implementing risk screening for depression among adolescents and future directions.
