The consequences of adversity and maltreatment in brain function among adolescents and young adults

Abstract

Maltreatment and abuse has longstanding consequences on brain function across development. This might be particularly the case among adolescents and young adults whose brain function is still maturing. While there is widespread acknowledgment about the effects of maltreatment and abuse in brain development, there is very little research published in this topic. The presenting papers cover the consequences of a variety of maltreatment variables upon brain function. Vijayakumar found altered rostrolateral and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) in adolescents within the welfare system compared to controls during simulated social interactions. Similarly, Engstrom found PFC functional alteration during both verbal self-processing associated with duration of abuse among adolescents as well as functional consequences of more intrusive forms of abuse. Finally, Eckstrand found that number of traumatic events during reward processing was associated with altered ventral anterior cingulate cortex activation and connectivity with the PFC and temporoparietal regions. The discussion will summarize convergence of findings in cortical function and connectivity, likely dimensions of social and reward function affected by maltreatment and ramifications for clinical interventsions.
