Functional brain predictors and correlates of suicidal ideation and non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents

Abstract

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among adolescents and young adults in the U.S. Suicidal ideation (SI) and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) are prevalent, and often co-occurring but distinct phenomenon that each incur risk for death by suicide. However, very little is known about the neurobiological substrates of SI and NSSI in adolescents. Focusing on multimodal functional MRI methods, this symposium aims to advance our understanding of the neurobiological markers commonly related to self-referential processing, emotion regulation, and future planning that are associated with SI and NSSI in youth. First, we will present data from a large nationally representative sample of 9–10-year-old children on associations between SI and intrinsic connectivity and task-elicited activation to emotional stimuli in the cortical default mode (DMN) and salience networks (SN) compared to children without SI. Second, we will describe results from a community sample of children and adolescents where machine learning algorithms applied to whole brain graph theoretical metrics predicted severity of SI 4 years later. Third, we will present data from a sample of adolescents and emerging adults with NSSI showing that increased connectivity patterns in regions of the DMN and SN are associated with higher scores on a dimensional measure of suicide risk. Finally, we will describe shared and unique patterns among subnetworks in the DMN and SN associated with SI and/or NSSI in a sample of adolescents with depression. Together, these findings highlight potential neurobiological underpinnings of suicide risk that may inform intervention efforts.
