Novel perspectives on the neurodevelopment of emotion regulation

Abstract

Emotion regulation (ER) is a core component of emotional development, while disruptions to ER constitute a transdiagnostic risk factor for developmental psychopathology. This symposium will present cutting-edge research that addresses pressing questions regarding the neurodevelopment of ER. The first two speakers will present work that seeks to uncover the neurodevelopmental ingredients that give rise to adaptive ER. First, we will present evidence that dynamic EEG-derived measures are sensitive to both implicit and explicit forms of ER in childhood and are predictive of emotional behavior. Second, we will share fMRI work indicating that while chronological age and ER ability are highly correlated in adolescence, they can be dissociated using novel metrics of regional cortical and network connectivity specialization during emotion regulation. The latter two talks of this symposium explore how a child’s caregiving context shape the neurodevelopment of ER in typical development and in psychopathology. Here, we will first present findings from a hyperscanning fMRI study aimed at understanding the neural circuitry underlying dyadic ER in parents and children. The theme of caregiving in ER will be continued in a final talk, which will discuss translational work aimed at identifying the neurobiological mechanisms by which parents regulate their children’s fears in the context of anxiety disorders. Utilizing multiple modalities (fMRI, EEG), age groups (children, adolescents), and methods (network neuroscience, hyperscanning), these four talks and the subsequent panel discussion will advance novel basic and translational perspectives on the neurodevelopment of ER and outline new directions for future research.
