The Role of Parents, Schools, Community, and Media in Creating More Equitable Experiences for Children

Abstract

On behalf of SRCD’s Equity & Justice Committee, our roundtable brings together scholars and practitioners to explore evidence-based practices for parents, communities, schools and media to promote equity and justice even under unfavorable societal conditions. Approaching children’s development from the bioecological perspective (Bronfenbrenner & Morris, 2006), our panelists will discuss the micro-, meso- and exo-system influences that can make a pivotal and critical difference in children’s lives. Dr. Shauna Cooper, an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will focus on parents and families. Dr. Paul Poteat, an Associate Professor, Counseling, Developmental & Educational Psychology at Boston College will discuss the role of schools. Dr. Dalal Katsiaficas, Assistant Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, will focus on communities. Dr. Jennifer Kotler, the Research Lead for Google Play, will moderate the panel and discuss the role of media and technology in creatine equitable experiences for children. This roundtable addresses two goals stated in SRCD’s strategic plan: (1) communicate, exchange, and translate, and (2) integrate diversity. Our discussion will help translate scientific research into specific suggestions and recommendations for practitioners, policy-makers as well as parents and researchers who are committed to equity and justice. Our panel highlights the diversity of SRCD---the diversity of identities of the panelists, the diversity of the populations we will discuss, and the diversity of the settings in which our equity and justice efforts take place.
