The Covid-19 pandemic impact on parenting of young children in the U.S., China, and Israel

Abstract

Since early January, 2020, COVID-19 has quickly spread internationally and caused tremendous impact on children and family wellbeing. This session includes four presentations discussing the pandemic impact on parenting practices during physical-distancing time. The first presentation “The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on parental stress and young children’s development during self-isolation” will discuss the risk factors that contribute to parents’ stress during stay-at-home physical-distancing time in the U.S. with consideration of family socioeconomic and ethnic background. The second presentation “Parenting in physical distancing: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on family experiences, home learning environment, and parental stress in China” will discuss the pandemic impact on home learning environment and parental stress during home confinement quarantine time in China. The third presentation “Parenting of Preschoolers during the COVID19 first Lockdown compared to routine days: Assessment via the Parenting Pentagon model” will discuss the changes of parenting pattern during the national lockdown in Israel. The fourth presentation “Assessing Mothers’ Developmental Parenting Capacity in Chinese, Chilean, and Spanish Cultures” will present a cultural-responsive assessment approach of parenting behaviors and discuss the necessities of utilizing cultural-responsive assessments to investigate the pandemic impact in different cultural contexts.
