Advancing the Measurement of Environmental Sensitivity Across Different Countries, Developmental Periods, and Contexts

Abstract

The concept of Environmental Sensitivity (ES) refers to individual differences in response to environmental influences, with a significant minority of the general population being more sensitive to experiences (Pluess et al., 2018, Lionetti et al., 2018). Markers of ES have been proposed at different levels of analysis (Greven et al., 2019), but only the Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) and Child (HSC) scales assess sensitivity more directly. Although these scales have been validated in empirical and experimental studies they suffer from several limitations. The current symposium includes three papers who aim to advance the assessment of ES by overcoming current limitations. The first paper introduces a new self-report measure, building on the existing HSP scale (Aron & Aron, 1997). The new sensitivity measure was tested in a large sample of 10,000 adults in the Netherlands. The second paper introduces an extended version of the HSC scale (Pluess et al., 2018), tested in large sample of young adolescents in Belgium. The third paper presents a newly developed teacher-rated sensitivity scale for children in primary school, which is currently being used in a longitudinal study in Switzerland and Italy. The newly developed measures presented in this symposium show acceptable to strong psychometric properties and items appear to represent direct phenotypical markers of increased sensitivity to stimuli in different contexts and across different ages. Implications for the advancement of the measurement of Environmental Sensitivity across developmental periods and countries are discussed.
