Advances in Writing Development and Assessment from Preschool to Elementary Grades

Wed, April 7, 4:20 to 5:50pm EDT (4:20 to 5:50pm EDT), Virtual

Session Type: Paper Symposium

Abstract

This dynamic symposium examines children’s writing, a fundamental but understudied area of development related to later reading success (Graham & Hebert, 2011; NELP, 2008), from preschool to elementary grades and considers innovative assessment approaches and critical skills that influence that development. The papers present multiple theoretical perspectives and utilize a range of methodologies to answer questions of writing development for diverse students including children living in poverty and children with ASD. Representing four different labs across the US, collectively, the works examine writing in innovative ways considering multiple writing tasks and coding systems to capture nuanced features of both writing products and process, the interrelation of essential writing skills on development, and the comparison of variable-centered and person-centered analytical approaches for understanding phenomena. The studies offer new ideas and the potential to ignite insightful discussion regarding the importance of pursuing a comprehensive framework of early writing and the value of child skills across language, literacy and socioemotional domains for early and later writing. Further, this symposium expands the limited research investigating how early writing is assessed including which features of products and writing behaviors matter across time.
