From Brain to Behavior to Daily Life: Cross-Level Assessments of Emotional Response to Peer Interactions

Abstract

New ecologically valid methods allow us to better understand how adolescents process threatening and rewarding peer experiences, which are hypothesized to predict risk behaviors and internalizing problems. These include simulated or personalized peer interactions during neuroimaging and novel ecological momentary assessment (EMA) approaches. However, we have little understanding of how neural and behavioral responses in the lab relate to real-world emotions with peers. The papers in this symposium address this limitation by integrating data on emotional reactivity in the peer context across brain, behavioral, and experiential levels in adolescents with or at-risk for psychopathology. The papers utilize EMA of real-world peer interaction, personalized fMRI tasks examining adolescents’ neural response to a friend’s positive affect and to performance-related feedback from a virtual peer, along with traditional eyetracking and ERP assessments of threat and reward processing. Findings reveal ways in which neurobiological and real-world responses to peer interaction relate to each other and differ based on psychopathology/risk status. For example, findings from Papers 1 and 2 show that neural response to potential peer negative evaluation are highest among socially anxious youth with more negative peer experiences in daily life, and that heightened neural response to peer evaluation in turn predicts lower feelings of day-to-day peer connectedness. Focusing on reward processing, Papers 3 and 4 show that neural response to reward in the lab predicts greater experience of positive affect with peers in daily life, and that brain and daily life indices of positive affect interact to account for health risk behaviors.
