Session Type: Paper Symposium
The experience of socioeconomic (SES) disadvantage embodies complex, multi-dimensional stressors that may adversely affect psychological and physiological functioning. The overwhelming majority of extant research focuses on family-level SES or perceptions of family and neighborhood disadvantage. However, family-level disadvantage often coincides with objective community-level risks such as pollution exposure and neighborhood SES. In this symposium, four novel investigations will present evidence that community-level risks are associated with academic functioning, mental health, stress physiology, and biological aging, over and above family-level risks. The first paper uses a longitudinal multi-ethnic birth cohort to understand how neighborhood mobility during the first five years of life impacts early academic achievement. The second paper uses a community sample to examine the effect of neighborhood disadvantage on cellular and neural measures of maturation in adolescents. The third paper investigates the association between residential air pollution concentrations and trajectories of internalizing symptoms across adolescence. The fourth paper uses a sample of low-income, Mexican-American adolescents to examine the effects of socioeconomic and environmental components of disadvantage during early and mid-adolescence on autonomic and hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis functioning in late adolescence. Collectively, this symposium considers multiple outcomes across diverse populations and points to the importance of bolstering communities’ physical and social attributes to provide equitable opportunities for healthy development in children and adolescents.
