Diversifying and Unifying Developmental Science: Supporting the Professional Development and Inclusion of Diverse Scholars

Abstract
Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (Latinx and Asian) (BIPOC) are underrepresented across all research spaces despite their important contributions to developmental science. In line with SRCD’s strategic goals to 1) advance developmental science, 2) integrate diversity, and 3) engage the broader SRCD membership, the overarching session goal is for SRCD members to come together as a unifying force to support diverse scholars and communities served through cutting edge, culturally-relevant, developmental research. A panel of diverse developmental scientists will share their experiences navigating their professional development trajectories and research focused on underrepresented communities. In sharing their experiences, panelists will highlight recommendations on how the broader SRCD community can join the movement to align the state of developmental science to be more representative and appropriately responsive to the culturally and linguistically diverse populations in the United States.
This professional development session will be led by Dr. Lorena Aceves, a first generation, Latina and current AAAS/SRCD Federal Policy Fellow and Dr. Michael Lopez, Vice President for Education and Child Development at NORC at the University of Chicago. Additional Panelists will include Dr. Chenyi Zhang, Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education at Georgia State University; Dr. Caroline Ebanks, Early Childhood Team Lead for the National Center for Education Research at the Institute of Education Sciences; Keiana Mayfield, MSW, MS a doctoral candidate in the Human Development and Family Studies program at The Pennsylvania State University; and Dr. Monica Tsethlikai, Associate Professor at Arizona State University in the School of Social and Family Dynamics.
