Using Intensive Longitudinal Approaches to Understand Child Development

Abstract

Research has underscored the importance of intensive measurement approaches to understanding the dynamic relations within emotions, behaviors, and interpersonal interactions over time. However, these approaches have not yet been widely adopted. The papers in this symposium have applied a variety of intensive longitudinal methods including Hidden Markov Models, Discrete Sequence Analysis using Multidimensional Scaling (MDS), Multilevel Modeling, and Dynamic Structural Equation Modeling (DSEM) to examine temporal associations among children’s expressions of fear, parents’ expressions of affection, and the co-occurrence of child problem behaviors. By examining temporal relations within these domains, we may be able to clarify the complex dynamic processes and better distinguish potential mechanisms that may perpetuate that behavior over time.

The first paper approximates children’s latent fear states and models their state transitions over time. The authors then used MDS to evaluate potential underlying continuous dimensions of children’s fear reactivity and regulation using the state trajectories. The second paper examines Chinese-American parent-child affect during a 3-min discussion and tested if language choice may serve as a vehicle for transmitting culturally distinct affective goals. The third paper examines the co-development of externalizing and internalizing behaviors at the within-person level from ages 1.5 to 8 years. The discussant will focus on the importance of using intensive longitudinal methods to advance our understanding of the dynamic processes underlying children’s development and promote interventions aimed to improve their adjustment.
