Trauma-Informed Evidence-Based Interventions during COVID-19: Lessons in Developmental, Cultural, and Contextual Telehealth Adaptations from NOLA

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic forced a mass shift from in-person to telehealth delivery of psychological services and amplified the need for trauma-informed care, as pandemic-related stressors and loss led to the onset of traumatic stress symptoms and exacerbated existing mental health conditions for children and families. As clinicians and clinical researchers navigate the adaptation processes for delivery and evaluative research of trauma-informed telehealth interventions, careful consideration of culture and context is important for ensuring acceptability and feasibility for the increasingly diverse populations receiving virtual care. Establishing a rigorous process and framework for telehealth adaptation and evaluation can support wider-scale efforts to develop and improve telehealth interventions to increase the reach of quality care both during and beyond the continued pandemic. Dr. Kate Rosenblum of the University of Michigan will moderate a Conversation Roundtable with four New Orleans based scholar-practitioners who are in the process of adapting evidence-based trauma-informed interventions to telehealth practice for research and health service purposes. They work with populations across developmental stages in community health, university medical center, and school contexts. Dr. Rosenblum has worked on the development and now telehealth adaptation of an attachment-based group program for mothers of preschool-aged children and brings expertise in both intervention and evaluation. Grounded in the tenets of evidence-based best practice and trauma-informed care, Dr. Rosenblum and the panelists will use New Orleans experiences as case examples to seek to answer: How do you adapt trauma-informed evidence-based practice for telehealth in a culturally and contextually-responsive way across developmental stages?
