Using Large-Scale Longitudinal Data to Understand Music Student Outcomes in Diverse School Contexts

Abstract

Participants in this symposium will present novel research results from work using large scale, longitudinal, administrative education data to answer questions regarding which students have access to music education, which students elect to pursue and elect to persist in music education, and the academic outcomes of students who elect into music education. Data sets considered in the presentations for this symposium include longitudinal data for all schools in a large urban county in the Southeastern United States, and for all students nationally who had enrolled in the music courses as part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. After the presentations, a discussant will provide a synthetic commentary and then engage the authors and the audience in a period of comments and questions.
