Neurobiological Predictors of Adolescent Mental Health during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in unprecedented disruptions to daily life, contributing to increasing mental health problems, especially for adolescents. Examining factors that contribute to increases in psychopathology during the pandemic is critical for identifying the individuals at the highest risk for psychopathology, and for informing treatment and intervention efforts. While many studies have examined psychosocial factors, considerably less work has examined neurobiological factors that predict mental health during the pandemic. This symposium includes research using neuroscience-based techniques in well-characterized longitudinal samples to examine how and for whom pre-pandemic neural functioning predicts anxiety and depression during COVID-19.

The first paper combines neural responses to errors (EEG) and behavioral measures of self-regulation to predict anxiety trajectories during COVID-19. The second paper examines the relations between fMRI ACC-amygdala connectivity at rest and parenting behaviors in early adolescence to predict depression symptoms during the pandemic.

The third paper examines interactions between pre-COVID neural activation (fMRI) to social rewards and shy/fearful temperament to predict depression during COVID in adolescent girls. Finally, the fourth paper investigates the longitudinal association between developmental trajectories in neural responses (fMRI) to social rewards and social interactions and mood during the stay-at-home orders.

Together these papers highlight how the neural systems involved in emotion/behavior regulation and the processing of social rewards predict socioemotional outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, all papers include relevant longitudinal factors that further elucidate the developmental processes contributing to risk for psychopathology, placing some adolescents at higher risk for anxiety and depression during the pandemic.
