Trauma Informed Approaches: Supporting Communities in Strengthening Measurement and Building Evidence of Impacts

Abstract

Communities and organizations are increasingly turning toward trauma-informed approaches as a framework for building resilience and mitigating and preventing the negative effects of trauma in children, families and communities. There has also been a significant investment in trauma-informed approaches from federal, state, local, and philanthropic partners, highlighting this critical opportunity to support children and families. Yet, there is a need to strengthen measurement to ensure the achievement of long term outcomes and build a robust evidence base to demonstrate the value of trauma-informed approaches to stakeholders and funders. Enhancing the field’s ability to collect data and engage in evaluation efforts can also demonstrate how trauma-informed policies and practices shape community outcomes. This Conversation Roundtable provides an opportunity for cross-sector learning, collaboration, and knowledge sharing around data, measurement, and evaluation capacity building in trauma-informed efforts. This Roundtable will bring together experts from multiple institutions and disciplines to speak about the state of data and measurement across trauma-informed approaches and to discuss innovative strategies to further efforts around joint research, evaluation capacity building, and continuous quality improvement to strengthen measurement and build evidence of impacts. The Roundtable will center on two primary questions: How can stakeholders strengthen measurement to build evidence of impacts in trauma-informed approaches? How can researchers and evaluators support programs and initiatives in building this capacity?
