Neural Processes of Parent-Child Bonding: Individual Differences and Parent-Child Concordance.

Abstract

Social bonds are deemed indispensable for human beings, with the parent-child bond often referred to as the most intimate and significant social relationship throughout life. While a stable and secure parent-child relationship attributes to many positive outcomes for both parent and child, increasing evidence arises about risk factors, both within (e.g., parental psychopathology) and outside the family environment, that negatively impact this relationship. The parent-child bond needs to constantly adapt to external challenges and changes by finding a new balance, which is easier to accomplish for some dyads than for others and individual differences in parents and adolescents may play a crucial role. Although an increasing number of studies in social neuroscience focus on human attachment, studies that particularly focus on the neurobiology of parent-child relationship are sparse. In addition, a vast majority of such studies focus on parent-child relationships at a very young age (i.e. infancy or toddlerhood), instead of older age-ranges. In the current symposium we will focus on the underlying neural systems that play a role in the formation and regulation of the parent-child relationship in both non-clinical healthy and at-risk families. We will focus on both the parental and child perspective and how these neural processes are linked to behavior of parents and children in daily life. In addition, we will zoom in on individual differences in these neural processes in parents and children as well as on the concordant patterns of coordinated neural networks across parent-child dyads.
