Session Type: Paper Symposium
The COVID-19 pandemic placed unexpected and urgent pressures on mental health systems worldwide to seek novel treatment delivery formats to safely meet the psychological needs of youth. In response to this crisis, clinicians and researchers took to rapidly adapting services to telehealth delivery formats (Sharma et al., 2020). Although prior research supports the efficacy of teletherapy for youth (American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, 2017), there is little research on telehealth-delivered evidence-based therapies (EBTs) for youth in a group format, which is cost effective and has additional benefits of reducing patient social isolation. Thus, timely research is needed to inform which group based EBTs can be successfully delivered in a “Tele-group” format, for whom they are most appropriate and beneficial, and best practices for implementation. The primary aim of this symposium is to describe adaptations and current empirical research on Tele-Group EBTs for youth with a range of mental health concerns. Investigators from the United States and Canada describe acceptability, feasibility, implementation practices, and preliminary outcomes of Tele-Group-delivered EBT interventions including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for adolescents with suicidality and self-harm, behavior management training (BMT) for disruptive behavior and ADHD, CBT for adolescent girls, and multi-family treatment for adolescent somatization. Collectively, this work represents an important step towards describing how group-based EBT’s have been flexibly adapted to telehealth, examining how youth and families experience these treatments, and reporting on their effects to support the adjustment and mental health of young people and their families in the wake of COVID-19.
